Our Mission
In My Back Yard is a friendly network of independent, small-scale food producers, wholefood suppliers and residents working together to build a more resilient, nourishing and community-centred food system for the local area.

Customers can order fresh, natural and delicious food direct from the producers via a convenient online platform. A phone buddy system will help those who aren’t online. Goods will be delivered to a collection point or direct to homes or businesses.

By working together, we support local producers with fairer prices, reduce food miles and overheads, revitalise the local economy and increase resilience to shocks in global markets.

Our Ethos
In My Back Yard producers and suppliers are committed to providing fresh, high quality food produced in harmony with our planet and its seasons. We grow and process food using methods that are as natural and sustainable as possible. All producers work to organic standards or beyond, some of us are certified organic.

Our passions and priorities are: Earth care, animal welfare, fair trade, low carbon distribution and knowledge-sharing. Our dream is to make healthy, local food accessible to everyone.

Our organisation is non-hierarchical and committed to creating a supportive, inclusive and regenerative culture. We use dynamic governance principles for effective group decision making, and to balance the needs and aspirations of all the members and the wider community.

“Connecting local producers direct with the local community in this way will make local food a serious and viable option for the weekly shop – currently dominated by supermarkets.”
Devon County Councillor Martin Shaw

In My Back Yard was recently awarded a development grant from the Devon Locality Budget. In My Back Yard’s founding producer members are Bulstone Springs Farm, Natural Branscombe, Elbow Farm, Browings & Comhar, Natural WorxFillfull, Artemis Bees and Vinnicombes Bakery, Norsworthy Dairy Goats, along with non-producer worker member, Emma.  We also wouldn’t be able to operate without many, many wonderful volunteers – thank you all!

More members will be joining us over the coming weeks and months as we develop our platform. If you are a producer based within 30 miles of EX12 3BL, your values and farming practices align with our mission and ethos above, and you are interested in joining us please contact us – we would love to hear from you.

Thank you for supporting local food producers

IMBY is being set up for the long-term. Our experiences with this emergency pilot phase will really help us develop our longer term plans. Thank you for being our test users and all feedback is greatly received!

Some things may not work that well yet. Please bear with us, and if you encounter any issues whilst making/receiving your orders please talk to us and we will help fix the problem.  We will be adding more fresh and larder produce over the coming days and weeks, as well as bringing more local producers on board.

Once things are back to normal, we may change things and we’ll also have more information on our producers, provenance and policies…plus recipes, a blog and information about farm courses and events. We are also linking up via the Open Food Network to other hubs in the south west so that together we can build a decentralised and resilient local food network for all.

Exciting times lie ahead for a more sustainable food system – in the meantime, we wish you all the best of health and thank you for supporting your local small-scale food producers.
